Microsoft Registers Senua Trademark Following Ninja Theory Closure

Microsoft has re-registered the “Senua” trademark, confirming that the rights to the heroine and the Hellblade universe will remain with Xbox even if Ninja Theory is shut down.

On September 15, 2026, Microsoft re-registered the “Senua” trademark. This took place amid reports regarding the potential cessation of Ninja Theory’s operations after the studio failed to reach an agreement with another publisher.

Ninja Theory previously fell under Xbox restructuring. Unlike Double Fine and Compulsion Games, which retained the rights to their brands after leaving Microsoft, the situation with the creators of Hellblade looks different.

Microsoft already owns the “Senua’s Saga” and “Senua’s Sacrifice” trademarks, and has now additionally protected the “Senua” name itself. This may be a standard measure to protect intellectual property, although future plans by Xbox regarding the universe cannot be ruled out, while this remains only an assumption.

Even if Ninja Theory closes, the rights to Senua and Hellblade will remain with Microsoft. This does not mean a new game will appear automatically.
