While the gaming industry was buzzing with the latest reveals and trailers from Summer Game Fest, New York’s Tribeca Festival was busy highlighting a different side of the medium. This year’s official selection featured 12 independent titles, carefully curated for their narrative depth and inventive design. In recent years, this showcase has served as a launchpad for breakout hits that eventually captured critical acclaim, such as Blue Prince, Dispatch, Despelote, and Norco. After getting some hands-on time with this year’s lineup, three standouts immediately grabbed our attention.

The mechanics are intuitive: you traverse a desolate rural village, now populated by the digitized phantoms of former friends and neighbors. Navigating this space is tense—some residents retreat in fear, while others confront you with hostility. By demolishing key objects and rogue androids, you unlock fractured memories that begin to piece together the history of this decaying world.</p>
<p><em>Virtue and a Sledgehammer</em> excels at building a sense of lingering dread through its distinct aesthetic and haunting sound design. The glimpses into Pratelle’s past, particularly her relationships with her mother and sister, left me wanting more. The demo was so compelling that I found myself starting a second playthrough immediately after the credits rolled.</p>

You operate simultaneously in two realities: as the titular truck, you are tasked with reckless deliveries, clearing obstacles, and causing widespread vehicular mayhem. Every pedestrian you displace manifests as an enemy for Clarissa, your anime-warrior partner, who fights to gain experience and fulfill her quest. It’s absurd, certainly, but it’s a brilliant fusion of genres.</p>
<p>Sessions are short and punchy, lasting about a minute, though clever players can extend their duration by collecting scattered power-ups. Randomized objectives—such as hitting parked cars or executing specific driving maneuvers—keep each run feeling fresh. There is an undeniable joy in the reckless driving, complemented perfectly by the charming art style and vibrant character designs.</p>

<p>From the outset, <em>Rockbeasts</em> establishes a believable rapport between these characters. As the manager, you decide the band’s daily schedule, balancing rehearsal, promotional efforts, and downtime to keep spirits high. Every decision carries weight, steering your band toward either grunge-rock stardom or the path of the dreaded sellout.</p>
<p>The experience is elevated by an engaging rhythm-based performance mechanic, where successful play results in better progression. Most importantly, the soundtrack is stellar. Given that the writing team includes talent from <em>The Witcher 3</em> and <em>Cyberpunk 2077</em>, I have high expectations for the full release.</p>Source: Polygon
