Japan’s PC gaming market more than doubles as more consumers shift from consoles
Japan’s PC gaming market more than doubled over four years, growing from $0.83 billion to $1.88 billion (from 132.1 billion to over 300 billion yen), while the platform’s share of the country’s total gaming revenue increased from 6% to 12%.
For decades, Japan was primarily associated with Nintendo, PlayStation, and arcade cabinets, whereas personal computers remained a niche platform. The situation is now gradually changing as more Japanese players choose computers.
This growth is not driven exclusively by local games. Among the most popular PC titles in Japan are Apex Legends, Counter-Strike 2, PUBG, ARC Raiders, and Call of Duty. The popularity of online shooters demonstrates the local audience’s growing interest in Western brands and global gaming trends.

If this momentum continues, it will become increasingly difficult for publishers to dismiss Japanese PC users as a small audience.
