Andrey Zvyagintsev’s compelling drama, Minotaur, has been awarded the Grand Prix at the Sydney Film Festival.
The accolade includes a cash prize of 60,000 Australian dollars (approximately $42,200). The jury was presided over by acclaimed Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho (Bacurau). In his acceptance speech, Zvyagintsev expressed his gratitude to the panel for their appreciation of the Russian language, noting that it is currently navigating a particularly challenging period.
Prior to its success in Sydney, Minotaur also captured the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. The film features performances by Dmitry Mazurov, Iris Lebedeva, and Varvara Shmykova, among others. The narrative follows a high-powered corporate executive who finds himself grappling with a profound professional dilemma while simultaneously uncovering his wife’s infidelity.
Minotaur serves as a reimagining of Claude Chabrol’s classic La Femme infidèle. International distribution for the film will be handled by MUBI.
