“Toni” biopic receives critical acclaim

The biographical drama “Tony,” which chronicles the formative years of celebrated chef and television personality Anthony Bourdain, has enjoyed a robust debut on major review aggregators. The film currently boasts a perfect 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside an impressive score of 75 out of 100 on Metacritic.

Critics have lauded the film as one of the year’s standout biopics, with particular praise directed at the performances. Dominic Sessa has been widely commended for his portrayal of a young Bourdain, while Antonio Banderas and Leo Woodall are highlighted as pivotal additions to the cast. Director Matt Johnson, known for “BlackBerry,” has also received accolades for his unconventional and refreshing take on the biographical genre.

However, some reviewers argue that “Tony” remains tethered to the conventions of a traditional biopic. Common critiques point to a predictable narrative arc and an underdeveloped romantic subplot, which arguably leaves certain supporting characters lacking depth.

The film is scheduled to premiere in Russian theaters on September 3.
