Zvyagintsev’s “Minotaur” wins over critics

Andrey Zvyagintsev’s drama “Minotaur,” which premiered yesterday in the Cannes Film Festival competition, has left Western critics spellbound. The film currently holds a stellar 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 19 reviews, while maintaining an impressive score of 91 out of 100 on Metacritic—a clear testament to the overwhelming critical acclaim.

Many regard the film as one of the director’s finest achievements. Reviewers have lauded Mikhail Krichman’s masterful cinematography, the film’s perfectly calibrated tone, and its sophisticated use of visual space. Furthermore, several critics highlighted the “Minotaur” for its sharp, dark sense of humor.

While the reception has been largely positive, some have pointed to the narrative’s predictability, noting that it serves as a distinct reimagining of Claude Chabrol’s “La Femme infidèle.”

The global theatrical release of “Minotaur” is slated for October.
