The upcoming *Resident Evil* adaptation, helmed by *Barbarian* director Zach Cregger, is projected to rake in between $40 million and $50 million during its domestic opening weekend, according to box-office analysts.

Should these forecasts hold, the film is on track to set a new franchise record. The previous high-water mark was held by the 2010 installment, *Resident Evil: Afterlife*, which brought in $26.7 million during its debut.

The film follows a courier (played by Austin Abrams) tasked with delivering a package to a hospital in Raccoon City. Upon arrival, he finds himself thrust into a nightmare as he encounters waves of victims transformed into relentless zombies.

The U.S. theatrical release for *Resident Evil* is scheduled for September 18.
