YUNGBLUD Says He Believed Rod Stewart Was His Grandfather Until He Was About 10
The singer recounts a childhood misunderstanding fueled by his grandmother’s tall tales — and a warm response from the rock legend.
YUNGBLUD revealed that, for much of his early childhood, he genuinely believed Rod Stewart was his grandfather — a story he says was nurtured by his imaginative grandmother.
Speaking on Capital FM during an Oct. 21 interview, the artist explained that his mother never had a father in her life and that his nan often spun elaborate fabrications. He recalled little rituals and comforting bedtime deceptions that reinforced the myth.
“She’d put me in a foot bath and tell me Rod Stewart was my granddad,” he said, laughing as he described how the fiction stuck with him through his formative years. By around age nine or ten, he still expected his supposed grandfather to be part of daily life.
The illusion finally collapsed during a trip to the supermarket. YUNGBLUD remembers picking up a Rod Stewart CD at the checkout and pleading with his grandmother about when “granddad” would return — only to be met with laughter from strangers. That moment made it clear the stories weren’t true.
Despite the mix-up, the exchange wound up being warmly received: YUNGBLUD says Stewart sent him a direct message after hearing the anecdote, cheekily greeting him, “Alright my wee grandson!”
The interview arrives shortly after YUNGBLUD’s collaboration with Aerosmith, “My Only Angel,” which hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Hard Rock Songs chart. The track is slated to appear on a collaborative EP the two acts are preparing.
