Yu Yu Hakusho Season 2 Ordered by Netflix

Despite years of radio silence, Netflix’s live-action Yu Yu Hakusho remake is returning for a second season. A report by Tokyo Sports states that the new season will begin filming this fall and will adapt up through the Demon World Unification Tournament arc.

The first season premiered on Dec. 14, 2023, to a mixed response. Fans praised the elaborate fight sequences for channeling the battle shonen source material. However, the show attempted to cram more than half of the source material into only five episodes. That source material spanned 66 episodes of the anime and 112 chapters of the manga, leaving the Netflix adaptation feeling emotionally empty compared to the original work.

If the report from Tokyo Sports is accurate, the second season will run into a similar pacing problem. The Demon World Unification Tournament is the final arc of the series. This upcoming season will adapt the remainder of the story, which consists of 46 anime episodes and 63 manga chapters.

Takumi Kitamura will return to play the main character, Yusuke Urameshi. Shun Oguri (Gintama, Lupin the 3rd), Nobuaki Kaneko (Song of the Samurai), Mirai Moriyama (Penance), and Mizuki Yamamoto (The Kirishima Thing) are joining the project as inhabitants of the demon world.

For those unfamiliar with Yu Yu Hakusho, the series follows Yusuke Urameshi, a teenage delinquent who dies in a traffic accident while saving a child. This selfless act earns him a second chance at life as a spirit detective. The job does not involve much traditional detective work, instead following the headstrong hero as he battles foes threatening the balance between the Human, Spirit, and Demon Worlds. Yoshihiro Togashi created the manga, which ran from 1990 to 1994, while the anime adaptation aired between 1992 and 1995. Both remain seminal works for the battle shonen genre.

Although live-action anime remakes have a poor reputation, Netflix found success with One Piece. That series is scheduled to return in 2027 with a third season adapting the Alabasta arc.
