Xbox Officially Introduces Disc-to-Digital Program

Comment Views: 1

Microsoft is rolling out a program called Positron that allows owners of physical game discs to claim a digital copy at no additional cost. Testing begins this Monday exclusively for Xbox Insider members.

The process requires inserting a compatible disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console, after which the system prompts the user to activate the digital edition. The physical disc retains its license and can still be transferred to another player, though the digital copy will then bind to the new owner’s Microsoft account.

Once the digital version is activated, the game no longer requires the disc to run. Players receive standard digital perks, including Xbox Play Anywhere support, access on PC and Xbox Ally handheld devices, and Xbox Cloud Gaming compatibility. Enabling family sharing also makes the game accessible to other members of the family group.

Positron will support thousands of titles at launch. Microsoft plans to steadily expand the lineup of compatible discs, though some physical releases may remain unsupported due to disc manufacturing differences or copy protection methods used at the time of their release.
