Writer Slams Rumors of Steven Spielberg’s Westworld

Just yesterday, the internet’s most devoted digital sleuths were convinced that Steven Spielberg was reuniting with Jurassic Park and Disclosure Day scribe David Koepp to reimagine Michael Crichton’s Westworld. When word broke Tuesday that Warner Bros. had tapped the acclaimed screenwriter to adapt the science-fiction classic, fans quickly connected the dots to Spielberg’s own recent teases about developing a Western project. The rumor mill began to churn in earnest.

However, during a conversation with Polygon, Koepp firmly debunked the speculation. While he kept his cards close to his chest regarding the specific direction of his Westworld script, he clarified that Spielberg’s involvement is purely a product of coincidental timing.

It is easy to see why the theories gained traction. Koepp revisiting Westworld—with the potential specter of Spielberg looming over the project—feels like a natural evolution, especially considering the original film serves as a spiritual precursor to Jurassic Park. In his 1973 directorial debut, Crichton expertly explored the terrifying fragility of high-end, tech-driven resorts when the luxury turns into a life-or-death struggle. The original film famously featured a malfunctioning robotic gunslinger terrorizing guests in an Old West simulation—a theme that Koepp and Spielberg would later master in their own way with the Jurassic franchise.

Bringing Koepp back for a new Westworld installment feels less like a random assignment and more like a calculated decision to bring in the architect of past successes. With no director currently attached, the collective imagination of the internet immediately pivoted to Spielberg, who has long expressed a desire to plant his flag in the Western genre.

After years of vocalizing his admiration for the classic filmmakers of the 1950s, Spielberg confirmed at SXSW earlier this year that he is finally developing a Western project. He offered few details beyond the promise of horses, firearms, and a rejection of standard genre tropes. That ambiguity provided the perfect opening for fans to project their hopes onto the Westworld reboot.

If Spielberg were to eventually join the fold, he would be tackling a property that has seen significant exploration recently. Warner Bros.’ television arm concluded a four-season arc of the Westworld series in 2022, and while co-creator Jonathan Nolan has expressed interest in providing a definitive conclusion, the path forward remains uncertain.

When pressed on his vision for the material following the television series, Koepp simply smiled, choosing to dismiss the rumors rather than fuel them. For now, he is keeping his creative process private.

“I have a few concepts in mind,” Koepp noted, “but it is a mistake to discuss the ones you are currently writing while the ink is still wet.”
