Former Dragon Age Director Discusses Development Challenges Behind The Veilguard

Dragon Age: The Veilguard failed commercially two years ago, but former lead developer Mark Darrah believes people are still trying to figure out how it happened.

Mark Darrah discussed the difficulties BioWare faced while creating Dragon Age: The Veilguard, along with the reasons that ultimately led to the game’s unsuccessful commercial launch in late 2024.

According to Darrah, the project practically lacked its most experienced leaders between 2017 and 2019. At the same time, several key BioWare employees, including Darrah himself, were reassigned to work on Anthem. This significantly complicated the development of The Veilguard and deprived the team of necessary stability during the early production stages.

The situation was compounded by the approach to delaying the release. Instead of giving developers a significant amount of extra time for a complete overhaul of the project, the release date was constantly pushed back in small increments. As a result, the team almost always felt that the release was already near.

Because of this, developers never had the opportunity to pause and critically rethink the project. The team could not shelve the current version of the game for long, rework fundamental systems, or completely reconsider individual decisions because another release date was always looming ahead.

Darrah also noted a broader problem for BioWare: the studio found it extremely difficult to fit the development of huge and complex role-playing games into EA’s push to regularly release new projects. The company’s previous games—Dragon Age: Inquisition, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and Anthem—also faced numerous delays, and these problems gradually accumulated.
