Actors like Walton Goggins fascinate audiences. There is something captivating about him that makes many wonder what makes him such an appealing actor. From playing Boyd Crowder on Justified to the villainous Sonny Burch in Ant-Man and the Wasp, he has a wide range of characters under his belt. Many of those characters do questionable things that leave viewers wondering whether or not they should root for him. Goggins always makes viewers want him to win even when he plays the bad guy, which is what makes his HBO thriller series such a beautiful exploration of Goggins’ ability as an actor.

Recently, Goggins seems to be everywhere. His comedy series The Righteous Gemstones gave audiences Baby Billy Freeman, and from there, he continued to check off boxes across the television world. He took on a sci-fi role in the hit Prime Video series Fallout before landing his HBO role in The White Lotus. The comedy-drama series started back in 2021 set in Hawaii. A group of rich guests stayed at a hotel that led to a dark finale. Viewers knew from the first episode that someone was going to die, and the only question was who. That format set up each new season of The White Lotus the same way. Someone dies, the audience does not know who, and they spend a season getting to know new characters while fearing for their fates.

When Season 3 dropped, it introduced Goggins as Rick Hatchett. Traveling with his younger girlfriend Chelsea, played by Aimee Lou Wood, Rick is a man of mystery. One of the elements that made his storyline so fascinating was his quest for revenge. While in Thailand, he pretends to Chelsea that nothing larger is going on. The season explores Rick’s upset over what he presumes is the death of his father, whom he holds responsible, and how those insecurities drive his relationship. The age-gap relationship became the talk of the season and led to an explosive finale.

We’d Watch Sam Rockwell and Walton Goggins For Hours

While Wood and Goggins brought viewers into Chelsea and Rick’s story, specific moments made it the most beloved part of Season 3. Sam Rockwell played Frank. Rockwell delivered an unhinged monologue and played a huge role in Rick’s storyline even though he appeared in only a few episodes. Frank brings Rick a gun, helps him carry out his plan against the man Rick thinks killed his father, and explains why Buddhism changed his life while giving the internet a monologue to discuss for months.

Season 3 of The White Lotus generated more discussion than the first two seasons. Each group of guests at the hotel put audiences on edge, but Season 3 stood out. Season 2 forced fans to say goodbye to Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya, while Season 3 featured Jason Isaacs as Timothy Ratliff, a man ready to kill his entire family rather than admit he was in financial trouble. Viewers knew from the first episode that a gunfight would break out at the White Lotus hotel, creating suspense until the final moments.

Goggins brought something special to his performance on The White Lotus. He gave humanity to Rick, allowing viewers to forgive his outrageous actions and his treatment of Chelsea. Instead of turning away, audiences cared about the couple and wanted them to resolve their romance, which feels contrary to every other couple encountered across seasons of The White Lotus.
