Valve Approves 15-Year Portal Remake for Steam Release, but Players Cannot Download It

The release of Portal: Alive & Kicking did not go entirely according to plan, and not all interested players were able to try out the new release.

Developer Rhubarb & Rhubarb managed to release the unofficial Portal remake on PC in late August. This long-term project is called Portal: Alive & Kicking, and its development took roughly 15 years.

Earlier this summer, the creators complained that they could not release it due to Valve, as company representatives stopped responding to messages. The authors modified the Portal 2 source code, meaning they had no right to release their project even outside Steam without approval from Valve:

We signed a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), but initially we did not sign the non-commercial release form. Now we have signed it, but we still have not received a response from them [Valve].

Now all issues have been resolved and Portal: Alive & Kicking has been released on Steam, but there is currently a problem: some players are not yet allowed to download the mod directly through the store. The developers are aware of the issue and are trying to find a solution.

The Portal: Alive & Kicking page on Steam is available at the following link. If you cannot download it through the store, there is a workaround: you need to go to the mod’s page in the SteamDB database and click the “launch” button, after which a window to install the project should open in the Steam client.

Portal: Alive & Kicking is a reimagining of classic Portal with graphics and gameplay improvements. For example, hints and the visual style have been refined, and various details have been added. In addition, the modders offer a new dynamic soundtrack.
