Upcoming open-world Lord of the Rings RPG could break a 10-year curse

When was the last time you genuinely lost yourself in a masterful Lord of the Rings game?

Middle-earth is synonymous with grand-scale storytelling, intricate world-building, and high-stakes cinematic battles. These are the very pillars that elevate a standard action game or RPG into something truly legendary. It is difficult to identify a contemporary fantasy narrative that doesn’t owe a debt to J.R.R. Tolkien; in fact, the blueprint of almost every modern title can be traced back to his seminal work.

If the legacy of The Lord of the Rings is woven into the very fabric of gaming, why have high-quality titles based on the franchise become so agonizingly rare?

Developers are certainly trying, yet the results remain inconsistent. Last year’s Tales of the Shire offered a cozy aesthetic that failed to resonate, while the survival-focused The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria moved units initially but ultimately lacked long-term staying power. Then, of course, there is The Lord of the Rings: Gollum—a title that will be remembered primarily for being one of the most disastrous adaptations in industry history.

While these projects stumbled for various reasons—ranging from tumultuous production timelines to a fundamental misunderstanding of the source material—the core issue remains. For most gamers, the last truly stellar entry was arguably 2017’s Middle-earth: Shadow of War. Even then, the reception was complicated; at launch, the game was heavily criticized for its intrusive microtransactions and repetitive grind. While it eventually evolved into a more polished, consumer-friendly experience defined by its brilliant Nemesis System, many players have now spent over a decade waiting for a follow-up that captures that same magic without the controversy.

Given this turbulent track record, one might expect a new Lord of the Rings announcement to be met with jaded cynicism. Instead, news of an upcoming open-world RPG from Warhorse Studios has sparked genuine excitement. We know that a Middle-earth RPG can thrive, and although Shadow of War was a technical marvel, it was constrained by segmented regions. A decade of technological progress means a modern title could finally offer the seamless, sweeping scale that Tolkien’s world demands.

The optimism surrounding this project largely stems from the pedigree of its developers. Warhorse Studios is renowned for the Kingdom Come: Deliverance series—games celebrated for their brutal realism, mechanical depth, and refusal to cater to standard power fantasies. These titles are notoriously rigorous, requiring players to attend to everything from manual blade-forging to sleep hygiene. It is the type of “hardcore” immersion that rewards patience and persistence.

While such unforgiving design isn’t for everyone, it demonstrates a commitment to creating a responsive, living world where the player’s choices and actions carry real weight. The writing in these games is so sharp that the supporting cast transcends the label of “NPC.” If any team possesses the fantasy expertise and the tenacity to “commit to the bit” and deliver the definitive Lord of the Rings experience, it is likely this one.
