Overwatch’s Massive New Sombra Rework Is 10x Better Than Expected

It is surprisingly humbling when a developer proves your initial skepticism entirely wrong. Alongside many others, I was fully prepared to dismiss the latest Overwatch Sombra rework. Shifting the notoriously elusive, perpetually banned hacker away from the damage role and into support felt like an unfortunate concession to players unwilling to master her mechanics. While it certainly caters to those who prefer a less demanding situational awareness, it turns out to be an exceptionally well-designed shift nonetheless.

Previously, Sombra’s kit as a damage hero revolved around:

  • A rapid-fire primary weapon delivering consistent kinetic damage.
  • A secondary hack that disabled enemy abilities and locked down health packs.
  • A stealth mobility skill providing temporary invisibility and relocation.
  • A viral projectile that drained enemy health over time.

The updated Sombra retains her classic primary weapon and translocator, but her hacking capability now features dual charges capable of sustaining allies with reliable healing over time. It functions similarly to Zenyatta’s harmony orb, albeit with two temporary, non-permanent placements. Replacing the virus is Cyberspace—an astonishingly versatile ability that simultaneously heals teammates, damages adversaries, and applies a debuff that dampens incoming output. Its utility is staggering. Did a dive tank push too aggressively? Cyberspace restores them. Are Juno or Lifeweaver attempting a massive group heal? Cyberspace neutralizes the momentum. Is Reinhardt preparing to dismantle your team with Earthshatter? Cyberspace intercepts it. Freja pulling targets together with a Bola Shot? Cyberspace turns the tide. The applications are practically endless.

As much as I praise Cyberspace, Sombra’s new therapeutic approach to hacking yields far better results than anticipated. Granted, it slightly diminishes the archetype of the malicious cyber-terrorist—she is no longer actively dismantling opponents, but rather processing diagnostic tickets and pushing critical updates to restore teammates. Yet, those patches perform remarkably well. Sombra may occupy the “technician” subclass rather than traditional healer positions like Mercy or Moira, but I consistently average around 8,000 healing alongside roughly 4,000 damage per match. Furthermore, I have already witnessed proficient players surpass 10,000 healing and over 6,000 damage.

Naturally, even the finest technical specialist struggles when teammates disregard instructions and rush into danger solo. In Overwatch, this translates to support players prioritizing aggressive damage over healing or abandoning cohesive positioning. Sombra’s refreshed playstyle aligns seamlessly with Blizzard’s push for cooperative teamwork. When coordination falters, however, her translocator offers a reliable safety net, allowing you to instantly reposition beside an ally in a manner reminiscent of Mercy’s Guardian Angel.

My only minor grievance—ironically, even when it works to my advantage—is how effortless it is to predict enemy ultimates and neutralize them preemptively. Sombra’s passive ability reveals when an adversary’s ultimate meter hits capacity. Combined with Cyberspace’s brief cooldown, mitigating game-winning moves requires minimal foresight. While her ultimate EMP has always cancelled enemy abilities, it demanded careful management. In her previous iteration, manual hacks could interrupt certain ultimates, but success relied heavily on precise execution. I remain somewhat conflicted, torn between appreciating how this synergy prevents abilities like Reaper’s Death Blossom from becoming guaranteed team wipes and believing it should demand a higher skill ceiling. Such impactful disruption belongs in active utility, not an automatic passive toolkit.

Then again, this is Sombra we are talking about, so additional iterations are likely inevitable. For the time being, I am thoroughly enjoying her snappy, revitalized cadence. Apologies to the purists—you remain fantastic, but Sombra has securely earned a permanent spot in my support rotation.

Get ready for a spooky season in Overwatch
