Ubisoft Will Continue Releasing Physical Games Despite Sony’s Strategy
Ubisoft will continue to release physical editions of its games despite plans by Sony to phase out discs by 2028.
During an annual meeting with investors, Ubisoft Chief Financial Officer Frédérick Duguet stated that the company does not intend to switch entirely to digital sales and will keep physical discs.
The publisher will decide the fate of physical releases on a project-by-project basis. Factors include the specific game, its audience, and target platforms. Ubisoft notes that certain genres are particularly popular among players who prefer collecting discs, making it unprofitable to abandon this distribution channel.

According to the company, major releases—including the latest installments in the Assassin’s Creed series—generate up to half of their sales in boxed versions across many key countries. For Ubisoft, giving up that share of revenue would be too risky a decision amid multi-million-dollar investments in AAA games.
