Unrecognizable Tom Cruise Stars in Trailer for His First-Ever Apocalyptic Thriller Comedy

Tom Cruise is undergoing a startling visual transformation for his latest project, Digger, directed by the visionary Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Sporting a chaotic, unkempt hairstyle that evokes memories of his unrecognizable turn in Tropic Thunder, Cruise’s new look signals a gritty departure from his usual high-octane polish.

While much of the project remains shrouded in secrecy, Digger is being marketed as a “comedy of catastrophic proportions.” According to Variety, the narrative follows Cruise as “the most powerful man in the world” who finds himself on a frantic, high-stakes quest to cast himself as humanity’s savior before a disaster of his own making obliterates everything.

The film’s teaser is punctuated by the brooding Gorillaz track “O’Green World,” a choice that heightens the story’s apocalyptic undertones. The footage introduces Cruise’s character, Digger Rockwell, initially seen in a shadow-drenched room clutching a shovel before transitioning to a striking moment of triumph on a seaside boardwalk. This production marks Iñárritu’s return to English-language filmmaking for the first time since his Oscar-winning success with The Revenant. The script was developed by Iñárritu alongside his Birdman collaborators Nicolas Giacobone and Alexander Dinelaris, with additional writing by Sabina Berman. For Cruise, this marks a significant homecoming to Warner Bros. Discovery—his first collaboration with the studio since Edge of Tomorrow over a decade ago—following a major development deal signed early last year.

Seeing Cruise pivot toward this type of auteur-driven, unconventional comedy is a fascinating career move.
