The sci‑fi blockbuster “Tron: Ares” pulled in $60 million globally during its opening weekend, with $33.5 million coming from the domestic market. Against a production budget of $180 million, these returns are underwhelming, and industry analysts say the “Tron” sequel is unlikely to recoup its costs.
In second place internationally was “Rooftop Robber,” starring Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst, which earned $8 million on a $19 million budget.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Battle After Battle” ranked third, totaling $138 million against a $300 million budget and seemingly far from breaking even. Benny Safdie’s biopic “The Crushing Machine” also faces box‑office disappointment, with receipts plunging to just $1.7 million.
