Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Used AI, but Developers Confirm All Assets Have Been ‘Replaced or Refined by Humans’

During the latest PlayStation State of Play, we received a fresh look at Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, the ambitious Unreal Engine 5 reimagining of Lara Croft’s 1996 debut. Alongside the new footage came word of a delay; the title has been pushed back from its original 2026 window and is now slated for release on February 12, 2027. However, eagle-eyed visitors to the game’s Steam page recently spotted an “AI-Generated Content” disclosure, clarifying that while AI tools were utilized during development, those assets have since been replaced or refined by human artists.

The integration of generative AI remains a contentious flashpoint within the gaming sector. Beyond the industry-wide distress caused by layoffs—often fueled by the misguided belief that automated tools can effectively substitute for human craftsmanship—AI development has also contributed to a significant surge in demand for high-end computing hardware. This has placed immense pressure on the supply chain, triggering a global memory shortage that has driven up retail prices for consoles and peripherals from PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and even Valve’s Steam Deck. For many gamers, seeing a highly anticipated title lean into generative technology feels like a disappointment, especially given the current economic climate.

The developer statement on the store page reads:

“AI-assisted tools were used during development to support some early exploration and temporary development content. Any AI-assisted assets were either replaced or refined by humans in order to maintain the creative and artistic vision of the development team.”

While it is encouraging to know that human hands ultimately finalized the project’s assets, the initial reliance on generative models—which are frequently built upon datasets of scraped, human-made artwork—remains a sticking point for many. For now, players must rely on the word of developers Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog regarding the extent of AI’s footprint in the final build.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is currently scheduled to arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on February 12, 2027.
