Tom Cruise Thriller Jack Reacher Is Now Streaming for Free on Tubi

When Prime Video introduced its Reacher series, fans of Lee Child’s crime novels greeted the show with relief. The adaptation proved entertaining, but viewers were most relieved by the casting of Jack Reacher. Alan Ritchson possesses a more sculpted look than the scruffier, older veteran found in the books, yet he matches the character’s imposing six-foot-five stature and freight-train momentum.

That physical presence stood in sharp contrast to Tom Cruise, who first played the former military detective in the theatrical features Jack Reacher and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. The latter film is currently streaming for free on Tubi. Readers balked at the five-foot-seven star taking the role. Both movies performed reasonably well against moderate budgets, but Child eventually agreed with his readers and opted to reboot the property for television with a taller actor.

The enthusiasm surrounding the Prime Video series has unfairly cast the earlier films as total misfires. In reality, the television adaptation might never have happened without the awareness generated by the Cruise-led productions. The series borrows many elements that the initial feature got right while adjusting for areas where it fell short.

The 2012 film remains a sturdy piece of entertainment, even if its sequel proved exceptionally dull. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Jack Reacher represents a style of mid-budget studio filmmaking that has largely vanished from Hollywood. The production paired a low-key crime narrative with an A-list star, overqualified character actors, atmospheric location shooting, and well-executed action.

The story adapts Child’s ninth novel, One Shot. When former Army sniper James Barr is arrested for a mass shooting in Pittsburgh, he requests Reacher by writing the nomad’s name on a legal pad. Reacher teams with defense attorney Helen Rodin, played by Rosamund Pike. While Reacher initially assumes Barr committed the crime, he gradually uncovers a conspiracy led by a chilling villain portrayed by Werner Herzog. Robert Duvall also appears as an eccentric shooting range owner.

The movie highlights the evolving collaboration between McQuarrie and Cruise, who previously connected on the 2008 film Valkyrie. McQuarrie built his early reputation on clever, dialogue-driven crime films such as The Usual Suspects and The Way of the Gun before steering the Mission: Impossible franchise toward massive cinematic spectacle. Jack Reacher bridges those two approaches. A standout car chase and a terrifying monologue from Herzog about chewing off his own fingers in a prison camp reveal the flamboyant style McQuarrie would bring to later franchise entries.

Cruise offers his usual physical commitment and intense screen presence, fitting into scenes where other characters describe Reacher as an unstoppable force of nature. Yet the fit remains imperfect beyond the obvious height difference. Reacher relies on a cool, relaxed temperament. Cruise has never projected effortless cool. His manic drive and perpetual urgency suit Ethan Hunt, who constantly races against world-ending threats. That same frantic energy feels disconnected from the quiet, gritty world of back-alley brawls and small-scale detective work.

Even with those shortcomings, Jack Reacher remains an enjoyable, well-crafted crime thriller that easily outclasses misfires like the 2017 reboot of The Mummy. The current television show owes a debt to the cinematic foundation laid by Cruise and McQuarrie.
