Tinkerers Create Browser Extension That Warns About Games Using Generative AI

Efforts to curb AI-generated content are escalating.

In early 2025 Valve required every developer on Steam to state in their game’s description whether generative AI was used at any point during development. The rule lets players make an informed choice and opt out of purchases if they object to AI involvement. In practice, though, the disclosure appears at the very bottom of the page and is easy to miss among the other text.

Frustrated by the way these notices were presented, technicians created the AI Warning for Steam plugin, available for Firefox and Google Chrome. When you open a game page that includes a generative-AI disclosure, the extension immediately displays a large modal warning and blurs the rest of the page until you close it.

By July 2025, roughly 20% of the titles released that year had employed generative AI, and the trend only grew stronger in the second half of the year. High-profile releases that openly acknowledged using AI include Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Where Winds Meet, and Arc Raiders.
