Last month, Chinese studio Eclipse Glow Games announced that acclaimed voice artist Jennifer English—best recognized for her standout performances in Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33—had relinquished her role as Gwendolyn, the central protagonist of Tides of Annihilation. While her casting was undeniably one of the project’s most tantalizing highlights, a recent two-hour hands-on session reveals that the title remains an exhilarating character-action spectacle, effortlessly holding its own even amid the casting transition.

While the recent recast naturally colored expectations heading into our preview session in Chengdu, China, the incoming voice talent seamlessly inhabits the role. Although the studio has yet to formally disclose the new performer’s identity, her delivery skillfully mirrors the atmospheric cadence established in prior showcases, ensuring Gwendolyn’s presence feels cohesive and commanding.

Following the playthrough, director Ary Chen and producer Kun Fu offered deeper insight into the circumstances surrounding English’s departure and her continued imprint on the production. Chen noted that while her withdrawal to prioritize mental wellness came as an unexpected disruption, the studio fully backed her choice without reservation.

“We hold tremendous respect for her decision,” Chen explained. “Personal well-being always takes precedence. Collaborating with her was an absolute privilege, and she went above and beyond by assisting us in casting her replacement, actively coaching through the transition, and offering valuable guidance along the way.”

Addressing inquiries regarding the volume of audio captured before the recast, Chen clarified that because active development is ongoing, English had not finished tracking the complete dialogue suite. Nevertheless, her artistic vision remains integral to the narrative delivery, as she continues to serve as the project’s voice director.
