The Witcher 4 Will Still Get A Physical Release, Even Though It’s Launching In 2028

CD Projekt has officially affirmed that a physical edition of The Witcher 4 is in the pipeline, despite the upcoming role-playing game arriving after Sony phases out physical media manufacturing for the PlayStation 5.

Will The Witcher 4 get a physical release?

Sony intends to halt the production of optical game discs for PlayStation consoles by January 2028. As The Witcher 4 stands as arguably the most anticipated blockbuster slated for that window, its creator remains deeply committed to physical media formats. Speaking in an interview with The Game Business, joint CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed that CD Projekt fully intends to deliver a boxed product.

“We’re massive advocates of tangible, collectible merchandise. We’re enthusiasts ourselves, and we genuinely appreciate that tactile experience. It’s something we have always championed,” Nowakowski noted. “So, regardless of the circumstances, we will definitely ship a boxed copy. It will come with physical goodies inside—the kind of immersive extras you’ll be eager to unbox and appreciate.”

That said, Nowakowski acknowledged uncertainty regarding whether the package will actually house an optical disc, given that CD Projekt has zero authority over Sony’s manufacturing decisions. “We are well aware of PlayStation’s public announcements, and we hold zero sway over first-party policies,” he admitted. “Console manufacturers require discs to be pressed exclusively within their proprietary facilities. Therefore, if they indeed cease production by 2028, then unfortunately, a physical disc won’t be feasible.”

Even though Nowakowski conceded that manufacturing physical media for The Witcher 4 ultimately lies beyond his control, CD Projekt’s dedication to a boxed release remains commendable. Simultaneously, this situation highlights a growing need for console manufacturers to communicate their long-term roadmaps more clearly to developers, many of whom continue to face high consumer demand for physical formats.
