The Sims Designer Explained Why Diversity Is ‘Critically Important’ for the Franchise

Fans of the franchise are concerned about EA’s impending deal.

Electronic Arts’ agreement with Saudi Arabia has unsettled the The Sims community. Some fear the developers might drop certain “diverse” elements from the game as a consequence.

A Sims designer spoke with FRVR and shared his perspective. Charles London regards “diversity” as essential to the franchise.

He explained that The Sims sends players a signal: regardless of who they are or how they feel, they can be themselves within the world of The Sims.

Its appeal and the recognition of basic truths about our shared humanity forge an empathetic, emotional connection to the game that makes it so powerful […The Sims] is far more than a mere pastime; it serves as a means of self-expression. For that reason I consider [diversity] absolutely crucial, especially in times like these
