Valve adds Portal 2 PS3 version to Steam library free of charge after 15 years
Valve’s customer-centric approach continues to surprise and delight players.
Recently, a user named Far_Echidna1548 shared their experience interacting with Valve customer support. They had an activation code for the console version of Portal 2 and, many years later, decided to try claiming their entitlement to the PC version.
Portal 2 was released on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in 2011. At the time, the puzzle game supported Steamworks features. Owners of the game had the ability to link their Steam account, cross-play was available (PlayStation 3 players with PC/Mac players), and players could also receive a free PC copy of the game.
When attempting to use the Portal 2 PC activation code, Far_Echidna1548 ran into an issue and decided to submit a support ticket to Steam:
I do not know if I am writing to the right place. If you cannot help me, I will understand. I have a copy of Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 along with a code to play it on Steam. When I tried to activate this code, I was told that I needed to link my PSN and Steam accounts, but the servers were shut down eight years ago, so I cannot activate the game at all. All I am asking is—if you are able and willing to—please add a copy of Portal 2 to my Steam account. I will understand if you cannot do this.

A support representative named Dorian answered Far_Echidna1548’s request. The specialist avoided giving a “standard boilerplate response,” conducted a check, and then added Portal 2 to the user’s Steam library:
Hello! Unfortunately, we no longer support Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3. However, I can see the CD key you tried to add in our system, and it passes validation. I have added Portal 2 to your Steam account.
Players once again praised Valve for its attention to Steam service users.
