For many, the weekend is a sanctuary for rest and relaxation within the walls of home. However, Louis Leterrier—the visionary director behind Now You See Me and Lupin—has crafted a new sci-fi thriller that might just leave even the most dedicated homebodies feeling unsettled in their own living rooms.

The Last House stars Greta Lee (Past Lives) and Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent) as a couple who, alongside their two children, suddenly find themselves barricaded inside their home. Despite desperate attempts to break free, their residence has become an impenetrable fortress. The ensemble cast also features Gabriel Barbosa, Emma Ho, Noah Alexander Sosnowski, and Riley Chung.

The terror intensifies when they discover this isn't an isolated incident; it appears the entire world is facing a similar phenomenon. With the global population trapped, the family must pool their remaining strength and ingenuity to ration dwindling resources and solve the mystery of their sudden, inexplicable imprisonment.

The trailer captures a chilling inversion of domestic safety, turning the familiar environment of a home into a claustrophobic nightmare. According to production notes, the house was a custom-built, meticulously designed set intended to heighten the tension. The result is a space that feels both intimate and suffocating, filled with lingering traces of a life the family can no longer access.

While the psychological toll of isolation is a theme that gained cultural relevance during the pandemic, Leterrier elevates the concept here through a sharp visual narrative that keeps viewers on edge, questioning the safety of the very walls protecting the characters.

Beyond the internal struggle, the film presents an even deeper mystery: what has become of the world outside? Glimpses of persistent wildlife in the trailer suggest that nature carries on, raising the question of why humanity has been so abruptly severed from the exterior world.

We’ll finally get the answers when The Last House makes its global debut on Netflix on August 7.
