The New “Narnia” Will Be One of Netflix’s Most Expensive Projects

The budget for the upcoming “Chronicles of Narnia” adaptation, helmed by director Greta Gerwig (“Barbie”) for Netflix, has reached $280 million. This figure was revealed by the film’s cinematographer, Seamus McGarvey.

Should this valuation hold true, “The Magician’s Nephew” will rank among the most expensive productions in Netflix’s history. Currently, that title is held by the Russo brothers’ “The Electric State,” starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, which commanded a $320 million budget.

“The Magician’s Nephew” serves as a prequel to C.S. Lewis’s celebrated literary cycle. The adaptation shifts the narrative setting from the 19th century to post-war England, chronicling the origins of the magical realm of Narnia.

Additional photography is currently underway in London. The ensemble cast features Daniel Craig, Carey Mulligan, Emma Mackey, and “Lord of the Flies” star David McKenna. Meryl Streep has been tapped to voice the legendary lion, Aslan.

The film is scheduled for a theatrical release in February 2027, followed by its streaming debut on April 2, 2027.
