The Iconic Batman Movie That Inspired Star Wars’ Newest City Planet

While the Star Wars galaxy has frequently centered its urban drama on the sprawling ecumenopolis of Coruscant, the latest animated venture, Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord, is finally broadening its horizons by introducing us to the atmospheric world of Janix.

Characterized as a planet that has remained remarkably “below the Empire’s radar,” Janix presents a facade of self-governance through a democratic administration, bolstered by local peacekeepers like Captain Brander Lawson. However, as the debut chapters of Maul: Shadow Lord illustrate, this order is merely skin-deep. Beneath the surface, Janix is a labyrinthine den of iniquity, where ruthless gangs and shadow syndicates flourish in the neon-lit gloom. It serves as the quintessential breeding ground for Maul to reconstitute his Shadow Collective.

Executive producers Athena Yvette Portillo, Matt Michnovetz, and Brad Rau were given a clear mandate from Lucasfilm’s Chief Creative Officer, Dave Filoni: Janix needed to possess its own distinct soul. To breathe life into this setting, the production team synthesized a variety of aesthetic influences, ranging from the futuristic concepts of Syd Mead to the rain-slicked noir of Blade Runner. Yet, one legendary cinematic city served as the primary blueprint.

“We looked extensively at various depictions of Gotham City throughout the Batman mythos, with Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight serving as a major touchstone,” Brad Rau, the series’ supervising director, told Polygon. “One of Dave’s biggest priorities was ensuring Janix felt visually disparate from Coruscant. I believe we successfully captured that unique grit.”

The comparison to Nolan’s vision of Gotham is strikingly apt. Much like the Caped Crusader’s home, Janix appears as a monochromatic, industrial monolith by day, only to undergo a vibrant transformation after sunset. This duality is further emphasized by the show’s “painterly brushstroke” art style, which lends a tactile, organic quality to the mechanical environment.

The urban geography of Janix also mirrors the narrative structure of the Dark Knight trilogy. In Batman Begins, Gotham is defined by its claustrophobic slums and gang-controlled industrial districts. Similarly, Janix is tiered; Maul’s headquarters are situated in the city’s most dilapidated foundations, where the only path to dominance is a grueling ascent from the darkness into the light.

Given that Maul: Shadow Lord functions primarily as a sci-fi noir crime-thriller, drawing inspiration from DC’s most notorious city—a place where systemic crime is an inescapable reality—is a masterstroke of world-building.
