Hideo Kojima Compares Critically Panned Netflix Hit to Death Stranding

Game designer Hideo Kojima spotted familiar themes in a story about a family isolated inside their own home.

Hideo Kojima watched the Netflix sci-fi thriller “The Last House” and noted similarities to Death Stranding:

Kojima did not elaborate on his thought or clarify whether he liked the film. Fans have long tried to determine the developer’s opinion of movies based on the length of his posts, believing that more detailed comments indicate a higher rating. However, Kojima has never confirmed this theory, so drawing conclusions from the brevity of his message is not worthwhile.

“The Last House” follows Jason and Anne, who, along with their two children, find themselves locked inside their own home after a mysterious force blocks off the entire neighborhood. Due to the rain accompanying the disaster, the family cannot leave their shelter and must survive on their existing supplies.

Although gauging Kojima’s attitude toward the film is difficult, the critical and audience reception of “The Last House” is much more definitive. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film received 26% positive reviews from critics and 28% from the audience. Reviewers criticized the film for an underdeveloped script and insufficiently fleshed-out characters.

At the same time, the lukewarm critical reception did not stop “The Last House” from becoming a major Netflix hit. The film topped the service’s weekly ranking of English-language films and garnered 27.5 million views in its first three days, making it one of the most successful launches among Netflix original films in 2026.

“The Last House” was directed by Louis Leterrier, who directed Now You See Me and Fast X. The starring roles were played by Wagner Moura and Greta Lee. The film was released on Netflix on August 7.
