The director of the film adaptation hasn’t played Helldivers, but Arrowhead’s boss doesn’t mind
Fans of Helldivers met the news of Justin Lin’s appointment as director of the film adaptation with skepticism. Lin, best known for his work on the Fast & Furious franchise and a Star Trek feature, is not a gamer and has reportedly never played Helldivers.
An article in The Hollywood Reporter says:
Lin is not a gamer, and he has leaned on that outsider perspective in his approach to the project. He aims to uncover the humanity in the characters and to weave contemporary themes into the narrative while building the game’s world and mythology. Many elements remain to be explored, which the director finds intriguing.
Fans voiced their displeasure on the Helldivers Discord. Arrowhead’s CEO, Shams Jorjani, defended Lin:
Give Justin Lin a chance to work his magic. I trust Justin — he handled Star Trek very well.
The question remains whether Lin can truly capture the essence of Helldivers without firsthand experience of the game.
