The Critical Role and Final Fantasy 7 Crossover We Never Imagined

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation generated significant buzz at this year’s Summer Game Fest (SGF), but sharp-eared enthusiasts quickly spotted a notable shift in the cast: Tyler Hoechlin is no longer voicing the legendary antagonist, Sephiroth. Stepping into the role is Travis Willingham of Critical Role fame, who brings a markedly more resonant and profound vocal quality to the character.

Following the SGF livestream, director Naoki Hamaguchi clarified the casting change during a discussion with content creator Maximilian Dood. Hamaguchi noted that Hoechlin was unavailable to reprise the role due to scheduling conflicts. Willingham will now be working alongside his Critical Role colleague, Matthew Mercer, who provides the voice for Vincent Valentine.

Beyond the inherent surprise of recasting such a seminal gaming villain, this transition is particularly significant given that Sephiroth is expected to have a much more prominent presence in this final installment of the trilogy. While the original game primarily teased the “One-Winged Angel” from the periphery, he assumes a central, apocalyptic role during the finale—a thematic resonance reflected in the title Revelation, which draws inspiration from biblical depictions of the end times.

Willingham is a seasoned veteran in the voice acting industry. Beyond his iconic turn as Grog in The Legend of Vox Machina, he has lent his voice to legendary heroes like Thor and Superman, as well as fan-favorite characters such as Roy Mustang in Fullmetal Alchemist. His resume is equally stacked with formidable antagonists, including Lex Luthor, Cell, and Sebastian Shaw from X-Men ’97.

Interestingly, the casting might have been teased well in advance. Fans on X recently resurfaced a 2024 photograph featuring the Critical Role ensemble alongside a cosplayer, @cosplayvalkyrie, who was dressed as Sephiroth. In the image, Willingham can be seen making a “shushing” gesture, which followers now interpret as a playful nod to his then-secret involvement with the project.

Although some fans may feel a twinge of disappointment at the late-game departure, Revelation’s reveal trailer was undeniably compelling. It offered a glimpse into high-stakes showdowns with the Weapons, debuted the combat mechanics for Vincent and Cid, and teased a new class-based costume system. The effectiveness of this two-minute teaser underscores the emotional weight of the trilogy; even simple moments, like Tifa committing to the Black Mage mantle to honor Aerith, resonate deeply with the player base.

While critics might argue that the scope of this trilogy—particularly the expansive world-building seen in Rebirth—has occasionally felt indulgent, the series has consistently succeeded in breathing human depth into its iconic cast. It remains to be seen how Willingham’s take on Sephiroth will shape the legacy of this final chapter when Final Fantasy 7 Revelation launches in early 2027.
