A Brand-New Critical Role Campaign Is on the Way, and This Time It Will Use Daggerheart

This year’s Gen Con has truly exceeded expectations, delivering massive announcements from Wizards of the Coast, Darrington Press, and numerous other studios regarding endeavors that span from World of Warcraft to Star Wars. Regardless of your preferred system, tabletop enthusiasts have plenty of thrilling content on the horizon.

Naturally, there were treats in store for “Critters”—the dedicated fanbase behind Critical Role, the industry’s premier actual-play phenomenon. The enterprise’s publishing division, Darrington Press, thrilled audiences by detailing future roadmaps for Daggerheart, showcasing fresh accessories, and unveiling collaborative ventures with Roll & Play Press alongside Foundry Virtual Tabletop. However, the crown jewel of the presentation was the reveal of an entirely new Critical Role campaign.

Entitled Reign of the Weredragon, this upcoming Daggerheart actual-play miniseries weaves classic fairy-tale motifs into a distinctly macabre setting. While the cast remains under wraps, production duties will be spearheaded by industry veteran Chris Perkins, currently the creative director at Darrington Press and former game designer and creative director for Dungeons & Dragons.

Perkins is no stranger to the spotlight, bringing a wealth of on-camera Game Mastering expertise to the project. He previously served as Dungeon Master for Wizards of the Coast’s official actual-play series, Dice, Camera, Action, as well as the long-running Acquisitions Incorporated alongside Penny Arcade founders Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik. Because Perkins co-created Reign of the Weredragon as a premier setting featured in the upcoming Daggerheart expansion, Hope & Fear, this series serves as an ideal showcase for the new material.

Critical Role currently boasts a diverse broadcasting schedule filled with ongoing campaigns and limited series. For instance, Age of Umbra: Sallowlands—a dark, atmospheric Daggerheart adventure starring notable talents like Abubakar Salim and Jennifer English—is slated to air through mid-August. While an official premiere date for Reign of the Weredragon has yet to be announced, it is expected to run concurrently with the flagship D&D-based campaign.

In the interim, fans have plenty of programming to tide them over. New episodes of Age of Umbra: Sallowlands broadcast weekly on Twitch, YouTube, and Beacon.tv at 7:00 p.m. PDT, while Campaign 4 is scheduled to resume on August 27.
