<p>In the season 2 installment titled “The Devil’s Due,” the Dark Knight is wrongfully implicated in a murder after a burglar is slain and a blood-red bat symbol is left at the crime scene. The culprit is actually a radical cult operating under the belief that offering blood and riches to the demonic bat entity Barbatos will awaken him from his subterranean slumber beneath Gotham. The cultists don Batman-themed attire, convinced that the Caped Crusader serves as the earthly avatar of their dark deity.</p>
<p>The narrative subverts expectations by revealing that Barbatos is entirely fictitious—a fabricated urban legend manufactured by a manipulative charlatan looking to exploit his followers' stolen goods. The ringleader proves far from brilliant, openly boasting about his scheme within earshot of a zealous true believer, who promptly eliminates him for his blasphemy. Yet, within the pages of <a href="https://www.polygon.com/dc/" target="_blank">DC Comics</a>, Barbatos represents a vastly more catastrophic threat.</p>

<p>The moniker Barbatos originates from 16th-century esoteric grimoires, cataloged among the infernal spirits summonable by occultists. Beyond comic books, the name has surfaced in various <a href="https://www.polygon.com/game/shin-megami-tensei/36512/" target="_blank">Shin Megami Tensei</a> titles and <a href="https://www.polygon.com/genshin-impact/" target="_blank"><em>Genshin Impact</em></a>. Peter Milligan and Kieron Dwyer formally introduced the entity into DC continuity in the 1990 narrative “Dark Knight, Dark City.” Spelled “Barbathos,” the creature was summoned back in 1765 by a secret society of occultists that included historical figures like Thomas Jefferson. Because Gotham City was ultimately constructed directly over the ritual site, Barbathos engineered Batman's eventual existence to secure his own liberation.</p>
<p>Grant Morrison later repurposed the name Barbatos, redefining the ominous entity as a direct creation of Darkseid. Subsequently, writer Scott Snyder positioned him as the overarching antagonist of the 2017 crossover event <em>Dark Nights: Metal</em>. This storyline shares thematic parallels with the <em>Caped Crusader</em> episode by featuring a Gotham-based cult—the Court of Owls—though this version comprises society's elite rather than ordinary thieves. Snyder's Barbatos is an ancient cosmic force determined to shatter the Multiverse, unleashing corrupted variations of Batman upon Earth, most notably the twisted Batman-Joker amalgam known as the Batman Who Laughs. He further claims to have subtly manipulated Bruce Wayne’s entire life to ensure his destiny as the Dark Knight, weaponizing Bruce's deepest fears to forge the dark realities he commands.</p>

<p>Barbatos also surfaces in Ram V and Rafael Albuquerque’s 2023 gothic opera series, <em>Gotham Nocturne</em>. When Batman falls victim to demonic possession by a parasitic entity known as an Azmer, he leverages the presence of Barbatos to resist the corruption. This leads the hero on an allegorical pilgrimage across a desolate wasteland, where he steadfastly rejects Barbatos' temptations of absolute power, resolving to conquer his inner demons on his own terms.</p>
<p><em>Batman: Caped Crusader</em> clearly revels in redefining classic rogues, from transforming the Mad Hatter into an unhinged media personality to untangling Harley Quinn’s dynamic with the Joker. Reimagining Barbatos as a fabricated hoax rather than a genuine supernatural threat exemplifies the show's willingness to carve out an independent identity. Even so, one can hope future storylines might eventually dive even deeper into the more eccentric corners of Gotham's mythology.</p>
