Deltarune Chapter 5’s Final Patch Makes Its Hardest Boss Fight More Fun

Creator Toby Fox has rolled out a fresh update for Deltarune, bringing the acclaimed indie RPG one step closer to its long-awaited conclusion. Designated as version 0.0.253, this serves as the final planned patch for Chapter 5 as the development team shifts its full attention toward the remainder of the journey.

The official Deltarune X account published the complete patch notes on July 30. While the update primarily resolves minor bugs lingering from earlier chapters, it introduces a significant gameplay tweak to Chapter 5. Following the tradition of previous installments featuring optional, high-difficulty Shadow Crystal boss fights designed to test veteran players, Chapter 5 concludes this sequence with a formidable adversary named Pink. To make the encounter more approachable or drastically more punishing, the new patch introduces distinct difficulty modifiers.

Should players fall in battle against Pink, a distinct “Pink Bomb” will materialize outside the combat arena. Interacting with this object prompts a choice between “Nicer” and “Meaner” modes. Selecting “Nicer” softens the challenge by projecting clear visual indicators showing precisely where explosions will land, alongside granting a brief grace period by making the bombs take slightly longer to detonate. Conversely, “Meaner” elevates the stakes by increasing Pink’s damage output by 25% and accelerating select projectile attacks. Interestingly, both difficulty settings adjust the bomb explosion hitbox to activate one frame later than before.

Playfully encouraging players to step up to the challenge, the patch notes cheekily remark that “Girls like it when you are better at dodging danmaku.” Those persistent enough to conquer the boss on the punishing “Meaner” difficulty unlock a unique cosmetic reward. Upon Pink’s defeat, the subsequent cutscene features her showering the protagonist, Kris, with affectionate kisses. Aside from this amusing cinematic touch, the chosen difficulty does not appear to alter the broader narrative outcome of the playthrough.

Toby Fox concluded the update details by confirming that the studio has wrapped up its work on Chapter 5, with no further adjustments anticipated. Production is now directed entirely toward Chapter 6, the penultimate installment of the overarching Deltarune saga, which is currently targeted for release in 2027.
