On May 16, the iconic 2D survival sandbox Terraria officially marked its 15th anniversary. To commemorate this milestone, developer Re-Logic pulled back the curtain on a series of staggering sales figures that underscore the game’s enduring popularity.
According to a recent update on Steam, Terraria has officially surpassed 70 million lifetime sales. This impressive total is broken down across platforms: 39.6 million copies on Steam, 19.7 million on mobile devices, and 10.7 million across various consoles. The engagement remains equally remarkable, with an estimated 461,000 daily PC players and an staggering average playtime of over 101 hours per person.
Re-Logic also highlighted the vibrancy of the game’s modding scene, which rivals the entire player bases of many mainstream titles. The open-source tModLoader platform has seen 12.3 million downloads, and roughly 237,000 players engage with mods every single day—representing more than half of the daily active player count.
Despite its humble, unassuming aesthetic, Terraria has quietly cemented itself as an industry titan. It has officially outsold heavy hitters such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and the classic Pokémon Red & Blue, trailing only slightly behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. While it hasn’t quite overtaken Minecraft for the top spot in the survival genre, its monumental success remains a testament to the game’s unique appeal.
Looking ahead, the anniversary brought plenty of optimism for the future. Re-Logic confirmed that Update 1.4.6 is on the horizon, promising to introduce long-awaited cross-play functionality, with further content updates already in the pipeline.
Fans can also look forward to a special physical collector’s edition, set for a full reveal in June. Furthermore, the studio has partnered with Lost In Cult to release Terraria: Design Works, a definitive volume on the game’s development, with pre-orders launching at 1 p.m. EST on May 28.
If you have yet to dive into the world of Terraria, the game remains widely accessible across a vast array of platforms, including PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and mobile devices.
