Techland CEO Paweł Marchewka Says Players Expect Too Much, Ends Substantial Content Support for Dying Light: The Beast

Techland CEO Pawel Marchewka said during a community Q&A that the studio’s earlier five-year support model for its games did not work out as planned. Under certain conditions, he said, ongoing support can hurt workflows and get in the way of making something new.

Techland recently decided to end support for Dying Light: The Beast. After the game’s release in 2025, the studio shipped a series of updates and introduced a new edition. Not all players welcomed the decision.

The five-year support model didn’t work as well as we had hoped. We are a AAA studio. With every new game, we want to create an unforgettable gameplay experience and push the boundaries of what games can do.

Marchewka also reminded players that the developers “did not commit to long-term support” for Dying Light: The Beast. The game was conceived from the start as a complete, standalone release. Even so, Techland added new content after launch, including the free Restored Land mode.

Marchewka added that long-term support can disrupt the workflows of a small team and make it harder to work on something new. He also noted that players expect a great deal:

Supporting existing games for many years with small teams can seriously interfere with work on new projects. At the same time, players expect frequent, large, high-quality updates, sometimes several times a month and usually for free. With limited resources, we can end up derailing production [of new games] and still disappoint players.
