Euphoria standout Sydney Sweeney has been tapped to lead the upcoming film adaptation of Edith Wharton’s literary masterpiece, The Custom of the Country. The project will be written and directed by Josie Rourke, the acclaimed filmmaker behind the lavish period drama Mary Queen of Scots.
The narrative centers on a fiercely ambitious social climber—often cited as one of literature’s original femme fatales—who sets out to dominate New York’s high society at the turn of the century. Armed with striking beauty, an iron will, and a calculating intellect, she skillfully maneuvers through the elite echelons of the Gilded Age, leaving a trail of captivated suitors in her wake.
This news follows Sweeney’s recent success in Paul Feig’s erotic thriller The Housemaid, a production that defied expectations to become a major box office sensation.
