Subnautica 2 Finally Has a Release Date — And It’s Sooner Than You Think

Following a tumultuous development cycle, Subnautica 2 has finally secured an official release date. Developer Unknown Worlds confirmed this week that the highly anticipated underwater survival sequel will enter early access on May 14, coming to both Windows PC and Xbox Series X.

As the third installment in the acclaimed series—following the original Subnautica (2018) and Subnautica: Below Zero (2021)—this title continues the franchise’s tradition of deep-sea exploration and high-stakes survival. Players will venture onto an entirely new alien world, brimming with unique aquatic life and imposing Leviathans waiting to be cataloged. Notably, Subnautica 2 introduces a cooperative mode, allowing up to four players to explore the depths together.

“Co-op will give this installment a distinct identity,” noted Anthony Gallegos, the game’s design lead, during a recent interview. For the team at Unknown Worlds, integrating multiplayer was just as vital to the game’s vision as the fresh setting and narrative expansion.

The journey to this launch was paved with complications, primarily due to a protracted legal dispute between Unknown Worlds and its publisher, Krafton. While the game was initially revealed in late 2024, tensions boiled over by mid-2025. Krafton abruptly delayed the early access rollout and terminated several top-tier executives, triggering a high-stakes legal battle centered on a potential $250 million settlement.

The conflict reached a turning point in March, when a court mandated that Krafton reinstate CEO Ted Gill. Following his return, the studio quickly moved to lock in a May release window, a decision made shortly after Gill resumed his role, despite the chaotic state of the project’s internal timeline.

Recent confusion surrounding the publisher’s role—sparked when Krafton’s name briefly vanished from the official Steam page—was addressed by Gallegos. He clarified that the two companies remain partners, stating, “We’re co-publishing the title together. We are navigating these challenges as a team.”

Unknown Worlds remains deeply committed to community-driven development. Gallegos emphasized that early access is fundamental to their design process, and the team intends to iterate on the game by actively incorporating player feedback, much like they did with the previous two releases. Subnautica 2 is expected to remain in its early access phase for two to three years before reaching a formal 1.0 launch.
