Insider Reports Marvel is Developing Its Own Answer to The Boys

Marvel Studios has started developing a project centered on the Squadron Supreme, a team whose members were originally created as counterparts to the Justice League.

Insider Daniel Richtman reported that Marvel Studios has begun development on a project about the Squadron Supreme. The team is planned to be introduced after the movie “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which releases on December 17, 2027, and concludes Phase Six of the Cinematic Universe.

The Squadron Supreme first appeared in comic book pages in 1971 and was conceived as a parallel-universe version of the Justice League. Hyperion served as the analog to Superman, Nighthawk to Batman, Doctor Spectrum to Green Lantern, Power Princess to Wonder Woman, and the Whizzer to the Flash. The original lineup also included Amphibian, an analog to Aquaman.

At the same time, the Squadron Supreme cannot be called a standard parody of DC characters. In one of their most famous storylines, the team seized control to eradicate crime, disease, and poverty. However, the heroes’ attempt to build a utopia did not go according to plan and led to a split within the Squadron.

Because of this, in a modern context, the team is easily compared to the Seven from “The Boys.” Both groups reinterpret Justice League archetypes and show what happens when immensely powerful individuals stop caring about society. Meanwhile, the Squadron Supreme appeared 35 years before the release of the first “The Boys” comic book.

The project format and expected release timeframe are currently unknown. In the same publication, Daniel Richtman reported that Marvel is developing two special presentations targeting 2027: one dedicated to an individual character and another to an entire team. According to other rumors, the heroine of the solo special will be Mystique. Since the Squadron Supreme project is planned to be introduced only after “Secret Wars,” it likely does not belong to these two specials.

The rumor about the Squadron also offers a new perspective on reports that surfaced in May. At that time, it was claimed that Marvel was considering Brad Pitt and Rebecca Ferguson for “very major” roles in the Cinematic Universe. Fans now speculate that the actors could play Hyperion and Power Princess, respectively. Meanwhile, rumors about Pitt potentially playing Hyperion circulated several years ago, though no direct connection currently exists among all these rumors.
