Street Fighter 6 Producer Warns Series Faces Decline Due to Aging Audience
Street Fighter 6 producer Shuhei Matsumoto believes that without attracting new players, the franchise could have disappeared within ten years due to the aging audience of Street Fighter 5.
In an interview, Street Fighter 6 producer Shuhei Matsumoto shared that he and director Takayuki Nakamura realized this threat while working on the fifth installment.
We realized that if we didn’t do something about Street Fighter, the franchise would probably die in 10 years. It was critical. Therefore, we needed to create a game that would introduce people to the series anew and get them playing again.
According to the producer, the audience for Street Fighter 5 consisted primarily of people aged 35 to 45.
In 10 years, these people will be 60. It’s hard to sustain a franchise if you rely only on this group.
During the development of Street Fighter 6, Capcom decided not to rely on the fame of the series and assumed that younger players knew nothing about it. A modern control scheme and the World Tour story mode helped attract a new audience.
Street Fighter 6 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
