Throughout the penultimate stretch of Stranger Things season 5, a palpable tension has simmered between Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton) and Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) whenever Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) is in the room. It’s a quintessential love triangle: Nancy caught between her long-term partner and an ex-boyfriend whose character arc has transformed him into a fan favorite since the show’s debut. However, in the sixth episode, “Escape from Camazotz,” writer Kate Trefry and the Duffer brothers resolve this romantic knot with a refreshing maturity that sidesteps genre clichés to provide genuine closure for all involved.

[Warning: The following contains significant spoilers for Stranger Things season 5, episode 6.]

The previous chapter ended on a perilous note: Nancy, ignoring Dustin Henderson’s (Gaten Matarazzo) frantic warnings, fired upon a “shield generator” meant to breach the barriers of the Upside Down. Instead, her shot struck exotic matter, triggering a catastrophic meltdown of the interdimensional Hawkins Lab. As the environment dissolves into a caustic slurry, Nancy and Jonathan find themselves trapped, forced to seek higher ground as they await a rescue that may never come.

In what they assume are their final moments, the couple sheds their pretenses. They exchange lighthearted confessions about the cultural interests they faked to impress one another, but the conversation quickly pivots to heavier truths regarding their respective struggles with substance abuse and the growing distance between them.

They eventually address the fracture that appeared when Nancy headed off to college in season 4. Both acknowledge that while their bond was forged in shared trauma, that same history had become a restrictive weight. Nancy confesses her need for independence, clarifying that her desire for space from Jonathan doesn’t mean she’s running back to Steve.

The emotional apex arrives when Jonathan reveals the engagement ring he’s carried all season. In a lesser show, this would be the moment for a desperate, “last-chance” proposal. Instead, Jonathan admits that a marriage would be a hollow attempt to patch a failing foundation. Their love is real, but it’s no longer a romantic one; they share a tender, chaste goodbye rather than a cinematic embrace. By choosing individual happiness over the safety of a suffocating relationship, both characters emerge from the crisis stronger and more self-aware.

This narrative choice challenges the common “soulmate” trope found in young adult fiction, where protagonists are expected to settle down with their high school sweethearts. Often, female characters suffer most from this, with their legacy tied to domesticity rather than their accomplishments—much like the epilogue of Harry Potter, which focuses on Hermione’s family life over her career, or Katara’s conclusion in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Nancy’s admission that she doesn’t have all the answers—and certainly doesn’t want the “six kids” Steve once dreamed of—is a strikingly grounded take on teenage identity. For those seeking a more traditional romance, the show provides it through Max and Lucas, whose emotional connection remains a vital lifeline. But for Nancy, the path forward is rightfully her own.

Steve finds his own catharsis through his platonic bond with Dustin. Having carried the guilt of Eddie Munson’s death, Steve’s reckless heroism is finally checked when Dustin breaks down, pleading with him not to become another friend he has to mourn. This moment of vulnerability reaffirms that their brotherhood is the most significant relationship in Steve’s life.

While Stranger Things season 5 has delivered blockbuster spectacle, the series excels when it focuses on the humanity of its cast. “Escape from Camazotz” stands as a highlight because it prioritizes emotional honesty over easy fan service. As we head toward the series finale, these characters have finally defined what a happy ending looks like on their own terms.

The first seven episodes of Stranger Things season 5 are currently streaming on Netflix. The series finale arrives on New Year’s Eve.
