Stephen King to Release Final Book in The Talisman Trilogy

Most of Stephen King‘s bibliography is far from obscure. As one of the most famous novelists on Earth and a defining voice in horror fiction, even his lesser-known works regularly become best-sellers.

King has returned to his back catalog for a new release. Other Worlds Than These arrives on Oct. 6 as the second sequel to The Talisman, a 1984 horror and fantasy novel written in collaboration with the late Peter Straub.

The publication of Other Worlds Than These marks just over 25 years since the previous entry in what is now a trilogy. As the title implies, the book connects to the Dark Tower series, though distantly. Readers familiar with those books who missed The Talisman can catch up before the new sequel arrives.

Right here and now

The Talisman takes place in 1981. Jack Sawyer is a 12-year-old boy whose mother, the actress and B-movie star Lily Cavanaugh, suffers from terminal lung cancer. They move from Los Angeles to a tourist town in New Hampshire. Lily seeks refuge there while trying to escape Morgan Sloat, the greedy and untrustworthy business partner of her late husband, who likely had Phil Sawyer killed.

Jack befriends Speedy, a local maintenance worker who reveals the existence of another world. Speedy calls this realm the Territories, a magical reflection of Earth. Everyone on the planet has a twinner in the Territories, except for individuals like Jack whose duplicates have died.

Lily’s twinner is Queen Laura of the Territories, who is equally ill. An artifact located in the Territories’ equivalent of California can cure both women. Armed by Speedy with the ability to flip between Earth and the Territories, Jack journeys across the United States to claim the Talisman and save his mother.

Published in 2001, Black House serves as a direct sequel to The Talisman and is set in the fictional town of French Landing, Wisconsin. Jack is an adult and a former LAPD homicide detective who has taken early retirement.

When a wave of child abductions overwhelms the local sheriff, Jack agrees to help with the investigation. He discovers that these kidnappings tie directly to the Territories and the Dark Tower. If Jack fails to rescue the most recently taken child, the Tower could fall and take all of existence with it.

King and Straub wrote both The Talisman and Black House by taking turns. According to King’s afterword in the second novel, Straub would write for a period before handing the manuscript back. King also notes in the afterword that the connections between Black House and the Dark Tower series originated as Straub’s idea.

In a 2010 Reddit AMA, Straub stated that they developed the initial outline for The Talisman face to face in his Westport, Connecticut office. Subsequent drafts involved in-person work or laborious file transfers via modem.

Worlds enough and time

Shortly after Black House hit shelves, King and Straub discussed writing a third book in the series, but conflicting schedules delayed the project for 25 years. Just before Straub died in 2022, he sent King a long letter concerning the book that would become Other Worlds Than These. King finished the novel alone, using Straub’s notes and his own ideas.

According to King’s official website, Other Worlds Than These pits an older Jack against a rampaging gang of infected teenagers on Earth while he simultaneously confronts a hostile force from the Territories known as the Gullet.

King published a preview of the novel earlier this year in Esquire. Readers can view the first chapter right now, though that excerpt immediately spoils a major plot point from the conclusion of Black House. Fans may want to read the earlier novel before checking out the Esquire preview.

The first edition of Other Worlds Than These will include 38 black-and-white illustrations by Gabriel Rodriguez, who previously collaborated with King on the 2002 book Fairy Tale.

Multiversal constants

Following the theatrical release of The Long Walk, a live-action adaptation of The Talisman remains one of the longest-gestating Stephen King projects in development.

Steven Spielberg has owned the film rights through Universal Pictures for more than 40 years, making multiple attempts to adapt the material. Around 2009, Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment developed The Talisman as a six-hour miniseries for TNT, but that version ultimately stalled.

Netflix later pursued an adaptation. Matt and Ross Duffer of Stranger Things were attached to produce a television series based on The Talisman, but that deal fell through in December 2025. The completion of the trilogy may renew Hollywood’s interest in bringing the story to the screen.

The original books proved remarkably ahead of their time. The Talisman explores alternate universes in a manner that anticipates both the Silent Hill franchise and Everything Everywhere All At Once. Furthermore, scenes throughout both novels and Black House prefigure modern horror’s fascination with liminal spaces, such as Exit 8 and The Backrooms.

Reading the books today feels like uncovering a missing link in pop culture history. Perhaps the adaptation was never simply stuck in development hell, but rather required four decades for the rest of entertainment to catch up.

Other Worlds Than These is scheduled for release on Oct. 6.
