Stellar Blade Is “More Than Just a Successful Game” — Shuhei Yoshida on How He Landed a PlayStation Hit and Its Future Prospects

Shift Up’s game may inspire other creators across South Korea.

Shift Up’s much-discussed Stellar Blade drew widespread attention first on PlayStation and later on PC.

The former president of SIE Worldwide Studios told Minimap how Stellar Blade came to PlayStation’s attention and how Sony ended up publishing the title.

Shuhei Yoshida visited Shift Up a few years ago.

I visited Shift Up between 2019 and 2020 after hearing that an impressive console game was in development in Korea. To my surprise, the new project excelled in every regard — from 3D modeling and realism to visuals and combat. When I played it myself, it felt stylish, thoughtfully designed, and truly entertaining.

The former executive also said he was struck by how the team crafted the characters — the process of converting physical models into digital ones. One colleague immediately declared, “We absolutely want this game on PlayStation.”

Yoshida argued that Stellar Blade is more than just a “successful game.” If it succeeds, it could motivate many other Korean developers to pursue their own ambitions.

He added that the show G-Star and the growing confidence among Korean developers are, in part, a consequence of Stellar Blade’s influence.
