Steam creator Gabe Newell acquires the world’s 50th-largest yacht with a medical suite, tenders and a game room

With Steam’s massive popularity, Valve’s revenues are enormous — and Gabe Newell has reportedly chosen to spend a portion of that wealth. Boat International reported that Newell has purchased a new yacht named Leviathan.

The vessel reportedly cost $500 million. The acquisition was reportedly simpler for Newell because he owns Oceanco, the yard that built the yacht. For that price he acquired what amounts to a floating mansion: a garage capable of housing a submarine and several tenders, a fully equipped medical suite staffed by an on-duty nurse, two fitness centers, every imaginable luxury, and a dedicated gaming room outfitted with 15 high-performance computers. Leviathan is now the 50th-largest yacht in the world and expands Newell’s collection, which already included two other vessels.

Reactions were immediate: some argued he could have directed the funds toward more meaningful causes — for example, ocean conservation given his interest in diving — while others shrugged it off as a personal indulgence.
