Square Enix’s Zelda Alternative Officially Releases in One Month

There is a unique, refined charm to the concise, high-impact experiences found in classic role-playing games. Often, I find myself lacking the bandwidth for the massive, multi-hour dungeon crawls that defined previous generations—especially when I’m aiming for a healthy sleep schedule. (I’m certainly looking at you, Persona 5.) However, present me with a 20- to 30-minute adventure packed into a single cavern, complete with the promise of tangible rewards, and I am entirely sold.

The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales arrives from Square Enix’s celebrated Team Asano, the visionaries behind the Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default franchises, as well as Triangle Strategy and the acclaimed 2022 Live A Live revival. Marking the studio’s inaugural venture into the action-RPG genre, the title demonstrates an astute understanding of how to curate a rewarding, snackable gameplay loop. During a recent hour-long hands-on preview, I was presented with an abundance of engaging tasks—and the time simply evaporated.

In the role of Elliot, you embark on a quest to restore the land of Philabieldia, a picturesque medieval kingdom that, beneath its charming surface, is currently besieged by malevolent demons. Your odyssey spans four distinct eras of history. Assisting you is your loyal fairy companion, Faie, who provides essential traversal support, such as helping you bridge vast chasms or illuminating dark, treacherous environments. My play session picked up several hours into the campaign, so while I didn't delve deeply into the nuances of the time-manipulation mechanics or the overarching narrative, the focus on fluid exploration and punchy combat was more than enough to impress.

The combat mechanics feature an incredibly satisfying hack-and-slash rhythm, reminiscent of the classic Mana series. Beyond the standard sword and axe, I had a diverse arsenal at my disposal, ranging from heavy hammers and boomerangs to spears, explosives, and bows. Engagement is entirely seamless; you fight directly within the environment without being pulled into separate battle screens or bogged down by complex menus. Switching weapons is intuitive and instantaneous, allowing you to adapt on the fly. I appreciated that the game never mandates a specific playstyle—you are free to choose between heavy-hitting, deliberate strikes or agile, long-range skirmishing.

You are encouraged to master blocking, parrying, and chaining combos to maximize your impact. Thankfully, The Adventures of Elliot manages to avoid the current trend of "parry-centric" difficulty spikes. These defensive techniques are entirely optional, and you have the freedom to adjust the difficulty level at any save point. I found the default setting strikes a perfect equilibrium between straightforward action and tactical precision. That said, enemies are capable of dealing significant damage, sometimes chunking 30% to 50% of your health in one blow, so as you progress, you will need to either sharpen your instincts or opt for a more accessible experience.

If you participated in the July demo, you are likely already aware of the game’s emphasis on player freedom. This latest build confirms that this design philosophy remains central throughout the experience. You can fast-travel from almost anywhere, including inside dungeons, which is a brilliant quality-of-life feature that removes the monotony of backtracking. Should you wander into an area that is clearly beyond your current capability, Faie will issue a stern warning; you are still free to proceed, of course, but don't be surprised if you are soundly defeated by a boss you aren't yet prepared to face.

Every corner of the world is filled with hidden secrets, from suspicious cracks that beg for an explosive to intriguing nooks that reward investigation. The map is commendably dense, favoring detailed, focused design over the empty, sprawling open-world format so common in today’s market. Beyond standard caves, you’ll encounter specialized mini-dungeons brimming with unique terrain and environmental puzzles—think bouncy pumpkins acting as platforms or air vents that propel you toward new paths. Whether you uncover magicite to enhance your gear, learn a new ability for Faie, or find an item to expand your health bar, your curiosity is almost always rewarded.

Team Asano’s signature HD-2D aesthetic is a major highlight, transforming the environment into a place you genuinely want to inhabit. The top-down views of forest groves and medieval townships possess the delicate, intricate allure of a masterfully crafted pop-up book. True to form for Square Enix, the soundtrack is impeccably curated, featuring lighthearted, jaunty melodies for town exploration and intense, driving compositions that perfectly heighten the stakes during combat encounters.

The remarkably satisfying and punchy gameplay rhythm of The Adventures of Elliot made my hands-on time feel fleeting. While I only scratched the surface of the game’s time-bending narrative potential, I am genuinely eager to see how those mechanics broaden the scope of exploration. Fortunately, the wait is almost over: The Adventures of Elliot is set to launch on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X on June 18.
