Spider-Man Brand New Day Getting Rerelease with New Footage

As Marvel Studios’ recent release of Avengers Endgame: Encore proves, blockbuster movies can still dominate the box office after a multibillion dollar run. Sony reportedly plans a rerelease of Spider-Man: Brand New Day to bring fans back to movie theaters. Much like Endgame: Encore, the studio adds new footage of Spider-Man as an incentive.

According to Deadline, the new footage includes at least one cut cameo from Spider-Man: Brand New Day that connects to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Sony’s planned theatrical rerelease features extra footage with an appearance from Rosario Dawson’s character Claire Temple, also known as Night Nurse. Dawson played Temple in multiple Netflix Marvel shows including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders. The Night Nurse had her own Marvel comic series in the early 1970s where she tended to the medical needs of New York City vigilante crime fighters, though that version of the character was named Linda Carter.

Dawson stated in interviews that she filmed a scene that was cut from the theatrical release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Deadline reports that Sony has more than just a Claire Temple cameo in its pocket, indicating there will be more surprises in the extra footage.

Sony’s Spider-Man rerelease history

This would not be the first time Sony rereleased one of its Tom Holland-starring Spider-Man movies in theaters. The studio previously released an extended cut of Spider-Man: Far From Home and a More Fun Stuff Version of Spider-Man: No Way Home containing deleted scenes.

The reported rerelease for Spider-Man: Brand New Day helps boost the film box office haul, which currently stands at $2.495 billion according to Box Office Mojo. Brand New Day is the highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office to date with $950 million after two months in theaters. It ranks as the third-highest-grossing movie worldwide behind the original Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. The rerelease will likely not push Brand New Day to the top spot since it remains $428 million behind James Cameron’s Avatar.
