Bobby Kotick, Former Activision CEO, Joins Skydance Board Of Directors

Bobby Kotick, the polarizing former chief executive of Call of Duty publisher Activision Blizzard, has stepped into an unexpected new leadership position. Following the monumental $111 billion merger between Warner Bros. and Paramount, a newly formed board of directors has been assembled to oversee the parent company, Skydance. According to reports from The Hollywood Reporter, Kotick will join the board alongside prominent investor and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs.

The finalized acquisition of Warner Bros. by Paramount marks a seismic shift for the entertainment landscape, carrying profound implications not just for film and television, but for the interactive gaming sector as well. Warner Bros. Games currently oversees heavyweight franchises such as the Batman: Arkham series, Hogwarts Legacy, TT Games’ expansive Lego portfolio, and Mortal Kombat.

David Ellison, Chairman and CEO of Skydance, issued an official statement addressing the high-profile appointments. Commenting on Kotick’s inclusion, Ellison noted:

Bobby guided a major global entertainment enterprise through three decades of remarkable expansion, bringing invaluable expertise in cultivating enduring franchises and fostering deep audience engagement. His proven ability to merge ambitious strategic foresight with rigorous financial management aligns perfectly with the experience we require as we unify these organizations.

Kotick’s tenure at Activision Blizzard was heavily overshadowed by severe public scrutiny stemming from lawsuits that accused the company of harboring a toxic workplace culture characterized by widespread sexual harassment. While the details of these investigations remain deeply troubling, the legal battle ultimately concluded in a $54 million settlement in 2023 without any formal admission of liability. Employee dissatisfaction with executive leadership was intensely documented, notably culminating in a massive walkout and an open letter signed by thousands demanding systemic reform in 2021. Critics frequently targeted Kotick directly, alleging he minimized harassment complaints and permitted misconduct to persist. Nevertheless, Kotick remained at the helm until late 2023, stepping down only after Microsoft finalized its acquisition of the company.

While Microsoft’s takeover successfully integrated major Activision Blizzard titles into Xbox Game Pass, it also triggered a wave of widespread industry layoffs. The restructuring continued to impact personnel, most notably when Xbox transferred stewardship of the iconic Halo franchise over to Activision. Although no official restructuring plans have been disclosed yet, industry observers anticipate that Paramount and Warner Bros.—including their gaming divisions—may encounter comparable organizational shifts in the years ahead.
