Every reveal regarding Spaceballs: The New One has felt like a meta-parody unto itself. From the cast announcement—which masterfully lampooned the iconic The Force Awakens photo—to Mel Brooks’ tongue-in-cheek confirmation that the long-awaited sequel wouldn’t be titled The Search for More Money because he had already “secured the bag,” the marketing has been spot-on. Now, Amazon MGM Studios has unveiled the official synopsis, and it is every bit as sharp and hilarious as fans of the 1987 cult classic would expect.

While the film isn’t scheduled to hit theaters until April 23, 2027, Amazon MGM is preparing to discuss the project at a high-profile San Diego Comic-Con panel next weekend. Here is the official plot breakdown:

Somehow, Dark Helmet has returned! Forty years after the original Spaceballs, fifty years since the dawn of the galaxy’s most famous space opera, and one year after the trials of The Devil Wears Prada 2, a familiar darkness stirs. It is a threat so profoundly uninspired and devoid of originality that it has pledged to resurrect the past—every single frame of it.

With Lone Starr living in exile and Queen Vespa occupying the throne, the fate of the universe rests on the shoulders of Vespa’s wayward son, Prince Starburst, and a mysterious advisor known as Destiny. To save the day, they must rally the legendary figures of old—Lone Starr and Yogurt among them—before they realize the brutal truth: while some villains can be defeated with a lightsaber, the modern reboot is a monster of a different kind.

The premise wastes no time skewering the current state of the Star Wars franchise. The opening line is a direct jab at the infamous “Somehow, Palpatine returned” moment from The Rise of Skywalker—a phrase that became a shorthand for the frustrations surrounding the sequel trilogy’s narrative choices. By playing on the collective exhaustion of fans who have grown weary of the “Disney-fication” of the galaxy far, far away, The New One proves it hasn’t lost its satirical edge. It’s a bold, self-aware approach that suggests the movie will be a worthy successor to the original.

Alongside the summary, Amazon MGM dropped a teaser trailer that leans into the franchise’s penchant for visual gags. It features the same hapless henchmen from the original who once combed the desert, now busily grooming the sand to reveal the number “two.”

The film boasts an impressive ensemble, with original stars Bill Pullman, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, George Wyner, and Mel Brooks all returning. They’ll be joined by newcomers Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman—who is set to play his real-life father’s on-screen offspring. Directing duties fall to Josh Greenbaum, best known for the vibrant and quirky Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.
