Soulframe developers reassure fans that ‘the beaver will be okay’ following intense TennoCon gameplay reveal

Rest assured, animal lovers: that resilient beaver struck by an arrow during the Soulframe TennoCon 2026 showcase is going to be just fine.

At this year’s TennoCon Live, Digital Extremes unveiled the upcoming Warsongs Fable for Soulframe. This interactive story segment offered a fresh glimpse at Bayor—the new character voiced by Ben Starr—and the antagonistic, corrupted Vadagar Pact. However, the highlight for the team here was the unexpected sequence that allowed players to step into the role of a woodland beaver.

Early in the Warsongs demo, soldiers are tasked with guarding a basket housing an infant. In a desperate rescue effort, a beaver snatches the child and makes a daring escape downriver. For a brief, magical window—timed perfectly with the Warsongs title reveal—the player takes direct control of the swimming creature. It was a charming, inventive departure from standard cutscene transitions, transforming a fleeting story beat into an unforgettable gameplay experience.

When asked about the origin of this quirky mechanic, the developers noted that incorporating playable animals is a natural progression of Soulframe’s core themes and artistic direction. It likely won’t be a one-off feature, either.

“The game boasts such a rich array of animal life and artistry that we can seamlessly weave into the experience. The beaver felt like a logical evolution of those thematic pillars,” lead designer Scott McGregor explained. “Exploring the world through different creature perspectives is incredibly engaging. The beaver certainly won’t be the last, and we plan to expand on these animal-centric viewpoints as development continues.”

While the team mentioned a rat prototype currently scurrying around the game’s world, it doesn’t appear to be tied to immediate content. For now, players can look forward to embracing their inner “beaver mode” when Warsongs arrives this fall, along with the introduction of ridable mounts.

Senior community manager Sarah Asselin emphasized that the decision to make the beaver playable was driven by a desire for deeper immersion. “We opted for interactivity over passive cutscenes to ground the player in the moment,” she noted. “It makes the unveiling of the fable’s title feel much more impactful.”

If this philosophy leads to more creative animal segments, we are all for it. And most importantly, for those concerned about the arrow incident during the river escape: Asselin confirmed the beaver is safe and is presumably the same creature spotted later in Warsongs bearing a distinct blue handprint.

“I know I was deeply distressed when I first saw the trailer, as I was genuinely worried for Mr. Beaver,” Asselin admitted. “But rest assured, the beaver is going to be perfectly fine.”

Soulframe is currently running pre-alpha “Preludes” playtests on PC, with Digital Extremes granting access to those who register during TennoCon.
